Buying advice

Cycling clothing in 4XL and 5XL

The short answer

Men’s models go up to 5XL depending on the model, some up to 6XL, women’s up to size 54 depending on the model. Pad and features are the same in all sizes. Some models cost a little more in 4XL and 5XL.

Finding cycling clothing in 4XL or 5XL is often frustrating. At PROTECTIVE, many models come in sizes up to 5XL.

Why scaling up does not work

If a size M is simply scaled up, all measurements grow in the same proportion. But bodies do not work proportionally: the waistband needs more width relative to leg length, the straps of bib shorts need a different line, the hem of the jersey has to be longer so it does not ride up on the bike. So for 4XL and 5XL, pay particular attention to the measurements in the size chart.

How to find your size

  • Measure yourself instead of guessing. Waist and inside leg for shorts and tights, chest and stomach circumference for jerseys and jackets. Every model has its own size chart, the charts differ depending on the cut.
  • Use the size chart. On every product page the size chart helps you decide between two sizes.
  • Think about your riding position. Cycling clothing is worn sitting down. A jersey that looks good standing up can feel tight around the stomach on the bike. If in doubt, take the larger size, especially with race cuts.

Bib instead of waistband: especially in larger sizes

Bib shorts with straps have no waistband digging into your stomach. The weight is spread over your shoulders. If so far you have only known cycling shorts with a waistband and found them uncomfortable, try bib shorts. The difference is most noticeable in larger sizes. Which chamois pad goes with them is explained in the chamois pad guide.
