P-TEC Pad: our chamois pad
P-TEC is the name of the PROTECTIVE chamois pads, in two geometries: one for women, one for men. Which pad suits you depends on the length of your ride: up to 2 hours a flat, dense pad (ICON), over 4 hours or on rough ground a higher one (TRAVERSE).
From hour two onwards, the chamois pad decides whether you still enjoy the ride. That is why our pads come from manufacturers who specialise in them. Every P-TEC pad is made seamless and holds its shape, with large-cell foam that lets air through and wicks moisture away. Every product page states which pad the model has.
Women and men: two geometries, not one pad for all
Every P-TEC pad comes in a women’s and a men’s version. On the men’s pad, the volume sits at the front and in the centre. On the women’s pad, the contact area is wider and positioned further back, matching the anatomy of the sit bones. This is not a colour variant but a construction of its own.
The most common mistake: thicker is more comfortable
A high pad feels good in the shop and gets in the way on the bike. The thicker the foam, the more material works between you and the saddle, and the more likely friction and heat build-up become. Short and fast means flat and dense. Long and rough means higher, with more cushioning.
The four chamois pads in detail
ICON
Flat, dense pad with graduated zones: 8 mm pad height and 80 kg/m³ on the seat area, 6 mm and 60 kg/m³ at the sides for freedom of movement at the edges.
- Use: training, commuting and rides of up to about two hours
ELASTIC INTERFACE
Flat 3D pad with a reduced feeling of bulk. The top layer is the ECO-Premium fabric (83 % polyester microfibre, 17 % elastane), with perforated polyurethane foam at 65 kg/m³ working underneath. Highly breathable.
- Use: sporty rides in a flat riding position, two to four hours
TEOSPORT (Mengoshi®)
Single-layer pad with a low profile: three foams of the same thickness (10 mm each) and different densities (80, 90 and 120 kg/m³) interlock on one level. The denser foam at the front gives support, the central channel reduces pressure, and the mesh-like foam at the back adds elasticity and air.
- Use: racing, two to four hours
TRAVERSE
11 mm pad height on the seat area (V.F.C. foam, 90 kg/m³), 4 mm with 40 kg/m³ at the sides. Poron®92 inserts (240 kg/m³, 4 mm) sit at the rear pressure points and noticeably dampen vibrations and impacts.
- Use: long days, touring and competition, over four hours
Which pad height for which ride
- Up to 2 hours: ICON
- 2 to 4 hours: ELASTIC INTERFACE or TEOSPORT
- Over 4 hours or rough ground: TRAVERSE
You will find this in more detail, with a riding position check, in the chamois pad guide.
Shorts come without a chamois
Our MTB and trail shorts have no sewn-in pad. Underneath, you wear an underpant with a sewn-in pad. The advantage: you wash the two separately, and one underpant works under several pairs of shorts.
Care
Wash at 30 °C, no fabric softener, do not tumble dry.
