Cycling Rainwear

Cycling rainwear consists of a waterproof rain jacket and rain pants that you pull on over your normal cycling clothing. What matters is a membrane, sealed seams and a cut that works in the riding position. Here you will find rain jackets for women and men, rain pants to wear over your cycling shorts, and the P-Free Monkey all-weather suit for mud and persistent rain. PROTECTIVE® has been developing cycling clothing in Lower Bavaria since 1991.

What belongs in your cycling rainwear

For most rides two pieces are enough: a rain jacket over your jersey and rain pants over your cycling shorts. If you ride off-road, where water also comes from below, choose the all-weather suit, a one-piece overall.

Rain combo: jacket and pants as a set

A cycling rain combo, often called a rain suit, consists of a rain jacket and rain pants that go together. In the Men’s Rain Set and the Women’s Rain Set you combine the P-Rain II or P-Rain II W with the P-Seattle, long or short. You choose colour and size for each piece, and the set price is below the RRP of the two pieces.

Rain jackets: which model for what

P-Rain II and P-Rain II W

The entry-level rain jacket for commuting, everyday riding and tours. Ripstop of polyamide with a polyurethane membrane, 5,000 mm water column, with seams that are stitched and welded. The relaxed fit leaves room for your jersey, and the hood stows in the collar. Men’s · Women’s

P-Day N’Nite and P-Day N’Nite W

Rain jacket with mesh lining, 10,000 mm water column and 10,000 g/m² breathability in 24 hours, welded seams, hood with slide-rail function and fold-out splash guard. Men’s · Women’s

P-Cloudburst and P-Cloudburst W

Stretch 3-layer material for gravel and road: 20,000 mm water column, 30,000 g/m² breathability, welded and flat-taped seams, close-fitting slim fit. Men’s · Women’s

P-Space Age and P-Space Age W

3-layer rain jacket with a soft jersey inside, 20,000 mm water column, 30,000 g/m² breathability, hood that fits over the helmet, vents and large reflective elements. Men’s · Women’s

Rain pants to wear over your cycling shorts

The P-Seattle is a long over-pant for women and men: 5,000 mm water column, welded seams, room for padded cycling shorts underneath. You open the hem with a zip, so you can get them on over cycling shoes too. The P-Seattle Short covers only your thighs and seat, the places that get wet first on a bike.

All-weather suit P-Free Monkey

For wet days on the trail: the P-Free Monkey is a mudsuit made of 3-layer material with a 20,000 mm water column and 30,000 g/m² breathability. Stretch inserts sit at the zones where you move, the hood fits over the helmet, and ventilation zips on the leg let heat out. Unisex, with room for a layer underneath.

What to look for when buying

  • Water column: The value in millimetres shows how much water pressure the material withstands before water gets through. Pressure also comes from sitting on a wet saddle or from backpack straps.
  • Breathability: The figure in g/m² per 24 hours shows how much water vapour can escape. If you pedal hard, you sweat, and a jacket without vapour transfer gets you wet from the inside.
  • Seams: A membrane alone is not enough. Water gets in through open needle holes, so the seams on all models here are welded or sealed.
  • Fit: Relaxed fit for commuting and everyday riding with room underneath, slim fit for sporty riding without flapping.
  • Visibility and pack size: Reflective elements for dusk, small pack size for a saddle bag or backpack.

Models with a PFAS-free finish are marked on the product. The values for material, water column and breathability are on the respective product page.

Care

Wash rainwear with a little detergent and without fabric softener, and close the zips first. How to refresh the water-repellent finish is explained in the washing guide.

Frequently asked questions

Rain combo or all-weather suit?

The rain combo of jacket and pants is flexible: in drizzle the jacket is enough, you put the pants on only when needed, and you pack both pieces away small, separately. The P-Free Monkey all-weather suit is a single piece and made for mud and persistent rain off-road.

Rain jacket or softshell jacket?

A rain jacket has a membrane and is waterproof. A softshell jacket is windproof and water-repellent and keeps out light drizzle, but in persistent rain the rain jacket is the right choice. You will find softshells among the cycling jackets for women and men.

What water column do I need for cycling?

For commuting and short showers the P-Rain II with 5,000 mm is made for the job. For long rides in the rain or riding with a backpack, choose the 3-layer models with 20,000 mm.

Do the rain pants fit over my cycling shorts?

Yes. The P-Seattle has a relaxed fit with room for padded cycling shorts, and you can pull the P-Seattle Short over any cycling shorts.

Does the hood fit over the helmet?

On the P-Space Age, the P-Space Age W and the P-Free Monkey all-weather suit it does, as the hoods are cut for it.

Is there cycling rainwear for women?

All rain jackets come with their own women’s cut, recognisable by the W in the name. The rain pants and the all-weather suit are unisex. Separated by cut, you will find them in the women’s cycling rain jackets and the men’s cycling rain jackets.
